Thinking of the Power of Green

from:

These days everyone is thinking about the power of green. The power of green is everywhere in almost every home and business. We purchase products to clean our homes that cause little or no harmful impact to the environment. The power of green movement is important for everyone to support; we must do our part to prevent further pollution to our environment. Plastic bag companies make millions of shopping bags every day because there is a market for them. We could stop that market by bringing our own cloth reusable bags to the places that we shop. Each year tons of plastic bags end up in the landfills. They are left in parks and blow into the lakes and rivers where animals can ingest them and be killed. We can make a big difference by thinking of the power of green.

The power of green is in our feet. We could walk short distances, rather than getting into our cars and adding more pollution to the environment. Those of us that live in cities where everything is in walking distance can keep in good physical shape while doing our part to keep the environment clean. We can ride the bus or the train to places that is too far to walk. If more people rode city transportation there would be less cars on the road adding to the greenhouse gas emissions.

The power of green can be in everything we do. We can recycle plastic bottles, plastic bags, glass, newspapers and magazines, and aluminum cans. In most cities a truck comes around at scheduled times to collect what we have recycled. The amount of actual trash that we throw out could be cut down by 75 percent by recycling.

The power of green is in your lighting. By changing to compact florescent light (CFL) bulbs your power bill can be reduced by nearly 50 percent. CFL light bulbs use only 20 percent of the power that conventional light bulbs do. LED light bulbs save even more electricity than the CFL bulbs do; though they are quite expensive, but well worth the investment. CFL bulbs last 10 times longer than conventional bulbs, and the LED light bulbs last 10 times longer than the CFL bulbs. You are saving money by not changing light bulbs nearly as often, and you are saving because you are burning less.

The power of green is in your habits. Make it a habit to turn lights out that aren’t in use. Even though the energy saving light bulbs use less power, they use no power at when they are turned off. So many times we leave appliances on when they aren’t in use and that is just a waste of money. The power of green is in your thermostat. In the summer you can save energy by keeping the thermostat set at 78 to 80 degrees. The air conditioner will kick on when it is programmed to do so. In the winter set the thermostat to 65 to 68 degrees and you will use less power to heat your home. Changing our habits and the way we think can make a huge difference in our environment, making it a better place for our children and their children that come after them.
