What Is Wind Energy Explained
from: As the need to switch to renewable energy sources reaches a critical point, the popularity of wind power is on the rise for several good reasons. Before this energy source will receive the attention it is due, however, it is important for the question of what is wind energy to be answered on a more widespread basis. When information about this power source is disseminated, many people find themselves amazed at the possibilities. So, what is wind energy exactly?
Wind power is nothing more than a form of solar energy. Rather than capture the heat from the sun, wind energy harnesses the power of sun-produced winds on the earth’s surface. To fully understand the answer to what is wind energy, it does help to have a grasp on how this type of power is harvested.
Wind energy is generally harvested by using special machines called turbines. These are somewhat akin to big fans. Rather than blow air, however, their blades are blown by it. When this happens, a shaft within the turbine turns. This, in turn, produces power that is made usable by a generator.
What is wind energy is an important question to answer for a number of reasons. To fully understand what is wind energy, it can also help to understand its benefits. What is wind energy? It is:
• A renewable source of power – The wind cannot be used up. This renewable source of power has been and remains a natural force on the earth’s surface. Fossil fuels, such as coal and natural gas, however, can be used up and will be before too much longer.
• A cleaner source of energy – Wind power does not produce greenhouse gases. It also causes no pollution during its production. In comparison to fossil fuels, this source of energy is about as clean as it gets.
• A cost-effective option – Of all the different types of renewable power, wind energy is considered the most cost effective. This form of energy costs about 6 cents per kilowatt hour to produce. Its financial viability does depend on a number of factors, but it is much cheaper than other potential alternatives.
• A revenue generator – Farmers who play host to wind farms, property owners who do the same and other private individuals can gain from the use of wind power. This can be particularly good in rural areas where economic stimulation is needed.
What is wind energy is a question that is on the minds of many. As this source of power becomes more popular, it is a question that no doubt will be asked more and more.
